Uncle Dan is stunned.
He never anticipated that someone who came across the walking sticks would also come across this blog. But we must now in all praise and admiration award Marcellus Wallace with the "How in the world did he do that" Certificate of Achievement award.
Here is Marcellus' post from October 2, 2008:
"I found stick #4 in the woods near friendship heights / tenleytown in early may. My friend just found #13 near the same place."
This has reinspired Uncle Dan who put # 14 into play at the stream crossing on Saturday, October 5, 2008. Jogging by this morning, it was found to have crossed the stream at least once but still in play.
Again, thanks Marcellus for the amazing cyber seach in connecting the world of the wood spirits to the world of the virtual gazings.

Trail stick number 11 hits the road and moves on
Trail stick number 11 did not last long at the stream crossing. I think it has found a home in someone's closet. But it has to decide what it wants and if that is where it wants to be, then who am I to argue?
Several more trail sticks are just about ready to be launched. The photo along the margin shows four sticks in various stages of becoming. You can see that number 10 is still in emerging mode. I think it was a little reluctant to come forward and that is why very assertive number 11 got to the stream crossing before it. The before and after picture of number 10 (that is the one with the elaborate hair-do) give an idea of how they find you. That particular branch did not find Uncle Dan on the DC trails but instead lured him to Virginia where a large clear cut along the highway beckoned.

A humble beginning
Leaving these trail sticks along the way got started when Uncle Dan's sister, Judy, visited him for Thanksgiving. As the two of them (and of course Iggy and Robby the wonder dogs) walked the trail, she picked up a little branch along the trail to be her walking stick for the day. As we emerged from the trail, she leaned it up against a tree for the next trail walk. The next day, that stick had been used by someone else and had moved a bit down the trail. That branch came home and was carved with a wood spirit near the handle and became stick number 1.

Use it the Leave it
As you walk the trails of Washington DC, have you come across a walking stick with a wood spirit carved into it? Stick number 9 was placed on the trail a week ago and stick number 8 reappeared this weekend after two weeks of movement
