As Wood Spirits travel with their companions, hopefully their progress through the trails will be recounted here.

Use it the Leave it
As you walk the trails of Washington DC, have you come across a walking stick with a wood spirit carved into it? Stick number 9 was placed on the trail a week ago and stick number 8 reappeared this weekend after two weeks of movement

Here in Las Cruces, the sticks would be covered in green goo from mashing the inescapable green and yellow sphinx moth cateripillers which are invading just now! But I do fondly remember using good old #1 and enjoying the fall foliage in D.C. Love, Judy
I found stick #4 in the woods near friendship heights / tenleytown in early may. My friend just found #13 near the same place. Your hiking sticks are incredible. Please email me at marselluswallace17@gmail.com I'd like to learn more
A number of trail sticks have made different decisions in the past months. Always remember that the wood spirits make their own choices. They choose who to go with and who to leave. Over the past 3 months, most of them have let it be known that they had specific people in mind for the start of their journey. A good friend in Seattle, someone at work with a trouble walking, a health worker who was dealing with her own loss........so it has been a while since any of them have chosen to look for their first stop by starting on the trail. Trail stick number 24 did decide to go out in the world this past weekend and we all wish it well on its journey.
A trail stick to a Friend
Not all of Uncle Dan's wood spirits go on the trail. This one was sent to a good friend. On the back is carved the words "Looking after you Laddie". I think this Hulk Hogan looking Irish cop with a bit of of attitude was just want the doctor ordered

Some of the wood spirits have more elaborate hair-do
Trail Stick number 15 was left along a trail in the Shenandoah National Park
This one is awaiting you on a trail off of the Skyline Drive

Perhaps a trail stick for Robby will one day emerge for the stream crossings
Ready to hit the trail
Some last longer on the trail then others

Use it then Leave it
This blog is not about wood carving This blog not about the carvers It is about walking sticks that move up and down the trails. Each trail stick started as a dead branch on the forest floor and is returned to that same forest to march up and down the trail. The walking or trail sticks are numbered and have the words "Uncle Dan's-Use it then Leave it" carved near the wood spirit's face.
They each have their own personality. The wood spirits on each of them have emerged with only a bit of coaxing from the carver. The wood is from the branch of a tree that was already down on the ground because living trees are never disturbed. The sticks that insist on being carved, communicate that need with their special twists or their comfortable feel in the hand. Some are shorter for smaller hikers and some are longer for those with giant strides. After they are stained with a light varnish, a leather bootlace is inserted into a drilled hole to allow the leather to twist around the wrist. Some of the higher numbered trail sticks have custom carved slots for fingers and palms that make it clear who should be walking with them. While no stick has yet indicated its readiness for a left handed hiker, Uncle Dan rather suspects that one day, a branch will be clear in its message that it is not for a right handed person.
The trail sticks are left in the forest from which they came and are placed in ways that let the walker know that they are available for use. Starting points are often where the path has to cross a stream and rocks are the stepping stones to the other side. Being of assistance for balance as one crosses over on the boulders gives meaning to the trail spirits journey.
They disappear and reappear at different places along the trail.
These are their stories
The Kudzu Vinehas great twists but tough to hold the cuts

Uncle Dan is a novice wood carver. He lives in Washington, DC and walks the wonderful trails with his Australian Shepard that wind through the creeks of the city. Noticing that some of the creeks need crossing on slippery stones, he combined his pleasure in carving wood spirits into walking sticks with a community minded spirit. Carved trail sticks are left here and there with the words carved into them "Use it then Leave it"
